Rideau Hall, Friday, March 30, 2007
It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you here at Rideau Hall today.
I stand humbled in front of you, as I reflect on your remarkable ability to respond so effectively to the needs of millions of children in Canada and across North America.
I am touched by your commitment to ensuring quality health care for all.
I am moved by your devotion to saving the lives of so many people each year.
And I am inspired by your ability to persuade citizens from across the country to support you in your efforts.
In a time in which more and more people are being consumed by the spirit of “everyone for himself,” your efforts stand out as a refreshing reminder of our collective power to bring about meaningful change in the lives of others.
As governor general of Canada, I have made the plight of youth, particularly those experiencing difficulties, one of my main priorities. It is for this reason that I must congratulate the “Champions of Canada” who are here with us today.
Jeevan, Kelly, Braden, Micaella, Kiran, Brianna, Nicholas, Caleigh, Jessica, Christophe, Ben, and Taylor.
Let me look at you.
Your strength, in the face of some of the most painful situations, has revealed to Canadians the power of hope and conviction to carry us through the storm.
Your refusal to become victims of your circumstances, testifies to the miraculous strength of the human spirit to triumph over what appear to be impossible difficulties.
And your work, speaking to communities across the country, provides content and substance to my conviction that youth are the real leaders of today.
So I would like to encourage you to continue your vital work, as you stand as symbols of hope for us all.
All in all, I think that you, members of the Children’s Miracle Network, have created a strong and effective “circle of solidarity,” that draws youth, doctors, researchers, executives of large companies, and citizens, together to strive for the common good.
My greatest wish is that other Canadians from across the country will be inspired to follow in your footsteps, developing and strengthening effective ways of responding to the needs of the most vulnerable members of our communities.
Compassion, solidarity, altruism and strength are all qualities that enable us to work together to overcome those situations that are still causing pain and suffering in our communities today.
In this, we all have a lot to learn from your inspiring work.
You are strong … and you are wonderful ambassadors.
Thank you.
