“My husband Jean-Daniel Lafond and I are deeply saddened by the death of two more of our soldiers in Afghanistan, Sergeant Craig Paul Gillam and Corporal Robert Thomas James Mitchell, both members of the Royal Canadian Dragoons based in Petawawa, Ontario.
Our thoughts also go out to their comrades wounded during the attack in which they were ambushed in the Panjwayi District of Kandahar Province. The attack occurred as they worked courageously to clear a road of mines and other explosive devices that made it extremely dangerous and impassable.
This type of operation in which our Canadian troops are engaged as part of the International Security Assistance Force is not without risk. But they continue in their efforts with great determination, putting their own lives in danger to help the Afghan people to rebuild the infrastructures so vital to the development of their country.
Our hearts go out to their parents, loved ones and friends who are mourning the tragic loss of Sergeant Gillam and Corporal Mitchell. May they know that all Canadians stand with them now during this difficult time and honour the bravery of their actions.”
