Evelyn Smith began her work as a volunteer at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) when it opened its doors in 1974, and retired only in 2011,at the age of 94. During her four decades there, she was a mainstay of its boutique and café, and was particularly known for her work in the « granny program », which provides care for babies when their parents can't be nearby. As well, as she has done for years, Mrs. Smith still spends some time every week visiting with shut-ins at the Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre.
