Anne G. Freeland and Robert Freeland, Belleville, Ontario
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
For the past 24 years, Anne and Robert Freeland have opened their home to children with special needs and adopted six of them. They have also provided respite care for other children with difficulties - whether the problem was with a terminally ill parent or a patient with a personality disorder. They have hosted children from Chernobyl during 10 summers. Together they have raised money for the Special Olympics. A special education teacher, Mrs. Freeland has volunteered at Quinte Hospital as a palliative caregiver and fundraiser. Mr. Freeland volunteers with a local junior hockey team. Both are active in their church and with the Scouting movement. Together, they have given love, hope and a new life to children from around the world.
