Qamaniq Sangoya, Pond Inlet, Nunavut
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
For 30 years, Qamaniq Sangoya has been a compassionate caregiver to members of her community. As a midwife, she has taught young pregnant women traditional Inuit methods of pre-natal and infant care. She herself has cared for children whose parents were sent to hospitals outside the area. She has been a foster parent to a number of children, and has provided counselling to young victims of abuse or sexual assault. In addition, she has cared for the elderly and provided hospice care for people with cancer. In birth and in death, in celebration and in mourning, Mrs. Sangoya is always there to provide support by preparing meals, listening and giving comfort.
