Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Sandy Geldart, who was forced to leave school at grade 8 and work as a farm labourer during the Depression, discovered through his association with the Royal Canadian Legion that many local students could not afford to pursue higher education. The owner of a small bottle exhange business, he collected bottles, car batteries and personal donations to raise $77,000 to fund the "From Those Who Care Scholarship" which has so far allowed 29 students to pursue opportunities in higher education.
