Dorothy Anne Visser, Langley, British Columbia
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Since the early 1980s, Dorothy Visser has volunteered with the Native Brotherhood at the Regional Health Centre Pacific of Correctional Service Canada, a treatment facility for violent offenders. A Cree from Saddle Lake, Alberta, Mrs. Visser spends hours every week listening to and working with Native offenders, bringing them much needed support and sharing with them her knowledge of Native culture and crafts. Mrs. Visser also recruits volunteers and maintains relationships with Native elders and staff involved with Aboriginal programming. Mrs. Visser's caring and support helps these individuals make meaningful changes to their lives.
