Dorothy Mortimer and Ross Mortimer, Ottawa, Ont.
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Dorothy and Ross Mortimer were involved with the Yonge Street Mission in Toronto for many years. Mrs. Mortimer was a volunteer counsellor for street youth, spending four to five afternoons per week interacting with youth in the drop-in centre. Mr. Mortimer volunteered with a winter hostel program for homeless adults, often working the overnight shift. Since moving to Ottawa, Mr. Mortimer greets the clients of the Centretown Emergency Food Centre every Friday afternoon. Mrs. Mortimer is active with Ottawa Inner-city Ministries, attending the Friday evening coffee house where she ministers to the homeless and people who are addicted. She also visits the Youth Drop-in Centre on a weekly basis. Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer are caring and compassionate individuals who have devoted their lives to the service of others.
