Joe Persechini, Newmarket, Ont.
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Two decades ago, Joe Persechini assembled a group of volunteers in the Newmarket area to start a run/walkathon to raise funds for children with physical disabilities. Four runners participated in the first event which raised $2,700 for the Easter Seal Society. In 1998, four thousand runners participated and raised over 1.9 million dollars. The Persechini Run/Walkathon has become one of York region's largest one-day fundraising events, complete with carnivals, silent auctions and the "Great Restaurant Race". Through his dedication and hard work, Mr. Persechini has turned the event into a major fundraiser, as well as a focus for community spirit and involvement.
