Joan Hicks, Prince Rupert, B.C.
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
For more than forty years, Joan Hicks has volunteered as the Patient Services Representative and In-Memoriam Representative for the Cancer Society in Prince Rupert. She has helped countless children and adults deal with the trauma of this disease, examine treatment options, and maintain a support system. She also volunteers with Meals on Wheels, is a hospital visitor, and provides respite for caregivers as a volunteer with the Hospice Care Society. Mrs. Hicks also gives tours of the city to visiting tourists and is active in her church.
