Lewis George Fifield, Princeton, Newfoundland and Labrador
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
As a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for half a century, Lewis Fifield has held many positions in his local branch, including that of president. He undertakes fundraising activities and visits schools to explain to children the importance of honouring those who have served Canada in war. For 47 years, he has contributed to his church, serving as sexton and warden. He organized the first Santa Claus parade in his community in the 1970s, and played the role of Santa himself. For neighbours in need, he has always provided a helping hand, whether starting up a furnace, making electrical repairs, looking after livestock or providing a welcome meal. To the residents of his small community, he is the greatest volunteer and an outstanding man.
