Robb Carmichael, Markham, Ontario Governor General's Caring Canadian Award More than 20 years ago, Robb Carmichael took a small recreational program at Bloorview Children's Hospital in Toronto and transformed it into a major wheelchair sports organization. Today, the Canadian Electric Wheelchair Hockey Association is active at several locations in Ontario and as far afield as Vancouver Island. It provides a framework for a yearly average of 75 to 100 people with limited upper-body strength and individuals confined to a wheelchair to engage in team sport. As president of the association from 1981 to 1999, Mr. Carmichael devoted himself to making electric wheelchair hockey a viable sport in Canada. His efforts have brightened the lives of hundreds of young persons with severe disabilities.
