Mohammad Salim Sindhu, Calgary, Alberta
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Mohammad Salim Sindhu began volunteering soon after he immigrated to Canada from Pakistan in 1974. While assisting various immigrant aid societies, he became acutely aware of the difficulties that language barriers posed to new immigrants. As a result, in 1988, he established what is now known as the Calgary Immigrant Educational Society. The Society provides immigrant workers with employment counselling and opportunities to improve their English-as-a-second-language abilities and computer skills. In spending countless hours establishing and running the Society, Mr. Sindhu has assisted thousands of immigrants in achieving their goals in Canada.
