Since 2009, Rita Thompson has helped thousands of Canadians come to terms with their cancer diagnosis through the Healing and Cancer Foundation, where she served as the vice-chair of its board of directors. She has also dedicated over 18 years to helping at-risk and low-income men and women through her work as president of the John Howard Society of Ottawa and as part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
