    Beryl Kootenay, Calgary, Alberta Governor General's Caring Canadian Award After recuperating from a devastating accident, Beryl Kootenay embarked upon a mission of advocacy for aboriginal people and people with disabilities at local, provincial and national levels. She has founded and worked on behalf of a number of support groups and agencies, including the Awo Taan Native Women's Shelter. She has served on the board of the Calgary Urban Project Society and has supported its Family Resource Centre. Miss Kootenay regularly patrols the streets of Calgary to offer advice and friendship to people struggling with addictions, disabilities and poverty.
