Ruth Katherine Calvert, Calgary, Alberta (posthumous)
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
A mother of six, Ruth Calvert always found time to help her community. She taught Sunday school and led the Explorers, a group of 8- to 12-year-old girls. For 20 years, she coordinated the annual turkey dinner for her church, ran the concession stand for the hockey tournaments and organized garage sales. She played an integral part in founding the Heritage Centre, a seniors lodge, and organized activities and trips for the residents. Even in ill health, Mrs. Calvert contacted readers for church services, organized the seniors curling activities and, while watching the curling, she knit quilts for the seniors at the lodge or children at the hospital.
