Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
An active community volunteer all his life, Ralph Hjertaas has devoted even more of his time to helping his neighbours since retiring to Prince Albert in 1986. He is chairman of the Co-operative Health Services Volunteers, drives for Meals-on-Wheels, and canvasses for a number of charities. Mr. Hjertaas also organizes fishing trips and assists with a swimming therapy program for adults with physical disabilities, and builds wooden sleighs and toys for children in care centres.
