Shirley Matthies has been volunteering at hospitals since the age of four, when she helped her father deliver flowers to hospitalized patients in St. John's. She has since been a dedicated member of hospital auxiliaries in several other cities, including Toronto, Québec City, Ottawa, Georgetown, Picton and Belleville. She also helped organize and run Red Cross Blood Donor Clinics and was active in church work throughout the years. She volunteered with the United Church Women, the Sunday School program, the music ministry and the parish office.
