Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
Since her family came to Canada in 1957, Irene Romer has been a selfless community volunteer. She works at a non-denominational drop-in centre for people with mental disabilities, serving meals, distributing clothes and locating articles of clothing, dishes or linens. Helped by a small group of volunteers, she serves as a lifeline for many of the frail and elderly members of the Jewish community by visiting them regularly at home or in the hospital. Mrs. Romer also raises funds for children who are disabled or in need, conducts intensive study tours of the Montréal Holocaust Memorial Museum, and also volunteers with Hadassah-Wizo and the Combined Jewish Appeal.
