Wayne Robert Mitchell (posthumous), Burnaby, B.C.
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award
A Korean War veteran, Wayne Mitchell gave many years to improving the lives of aging veterans, their widows and dependents. Having served on the executives of the Korea Veterans Association, the Veterans' Memorial Housing Society and the George Derby Long Term Care Society, he provided direct assistance to many widows and dependents. He ensured that they received their pensions, fixed their roofs, instituted and arranged for four post-secondary scholarships for children of veterans, organized an annual dinner for the veteran residents of the George Derby Centre, collected toys for needy children, and promoted good relations between the Canadian and Korean communities.
