Montréal, Quebec

Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers

  • Awarded on: 2007-12-10
Sister Maura Mary Bridget McGrath, Halifax, Nova Scotia Governor General's Caring Canadian Award Motivated by a strong commitment to social justice, Sister Maura McGrath founded Refuge Juan Moreno in 1993, welcoming into her own home many refugee women and children seeking asylum in Canada. As volunteer director of the organization, she often escorted single mothers to hearings, and cared for their children while they attended court or medical appointments. In addition, she collected donations, organized picnics and fundraisers, and recruited a team of volunteers. With the support of the Montreal City Mission, Sister McGrath's remarkable efforts enabled Refuge Juan Moreno to become an independent registered charity with a permanent address, where it continues to offer shelter and protection to hundreds of newcomers to Canada.
