John Philips’ involvement in youth programs and other community organizations such as Shriners International, Kiwanis International, Scouts Canada and the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo spans several decades. With the Navy League of Canada, he created a new Sea Cadet corps in Cole Harbour/Eastern Passage, established an ongoing scholarship award, and is the division president of Nova Scotia Mainland.
