Since Yvonne Sam immigrated to Canada in 1975, she has been a mentor and a valuable resource to new Canadians. Through the Guyana Cultural Centre, she tutors children and attends parent-teacher conferences with new families to help them better understand the local school systems. She has also volunteered at a summer school program that helps students improve their academic skills and gives them an opportunity to foster their cultural heritage.
