Larry Murray is widely respected for his leadership and integrity. His long career in the Royal Canadian Navy culminated in his role as acting chief of the Defence Staff, in which he brought stability during challenging times. He then joined the public service and served as deputy minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and of Veterans Affairs Canada, where he led negotiations that ended a 50-year wait for recognition of Merchant Navy veterans. His voluntarism has also benefited such organizations as the Public Policy Forum and the Royal Canadian Legion.
