Merril Knudtson has made outstanding contributions to the field of interventional cardiology. A professor of medicine and a cardiologist, he pioneered the use of angioplasty for treatment of heart attacks in Canada. He has also been instrumental in the conceptualization and implementation of APPROACH, a registry that monitors and tracks the long-term health outcomes of cardiac patients. Adopted throughout the country, the registry has significantly improved response times for heart attack treatment and continues to promote accountability in the use of new technology and therapies.
