A renowned chemical engineer and academic administrator, Axel Meisen has made significant contributions to education in Canada. Among his many accomplishments as dean of the Faculty of Applied Science at the University of British Columbia, he led the creation of a new doctoral program in nursing and the establishment of five chairs in engineering. As president of Memorial University of Newfoundland, he was an agent of renewal. Thriving under his presidency, Memorial saw a significant increase in enrolment, unprecedented funding and enhanced research capacity in all academic disciplines. Realizing Memorial's important place in the province's economy, he also helped build bridges and strengthen links between the university and business, industry and community groups.
