A respected economist and administrator, she is known for her commitment to increasing tolerance and mutual respect in our society. She is the former executive director of the Laurier Institution, an organization devoted to informing the public about the social and economic impact of cultural diversity in Canada. A specialist on the effect of immigration on the economy, she served the federal government for two decades and is a popular public speaker. She has also been generous with her time, notably as chair of the Vancouver Stock Exchange and the Vancouver Crisis Centre, a governor of the North/South Institute and a director of the Business Development Bank of Canada.
