His innovative research work in antibiotic resistance led to the development of a new class of antibiotics. Internationally respected, he is the Canada Research Chair in Genomics and Health, Director of the University of British Columbia's Centre for Microbial Diseases and Host Defence Research and a mentor to many of Canada's top young scientists. A believer in our country's ability to lead biomedical research, he founded and was Scientific Director of the Canadian Bacterial Diseases Network Centres of Excellence. Striving to bridge the gap between academics and industry, he works to advance the application of new microbiological findings to the benefit of society.
