His contributions are rich and varied. Founding Director of McGill University's French Canada Studies Program, he also served as the Director of Research in the 1960s for the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism. Committed to excellence in education, this former President and Vice-Chancellor of Carleton University also served as President of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. A recognized leader in social activism and international development, he was the New Democratic Party of Canada's founding president, head of the World University Service of Canada and a co-founder of Canada World Youth.
