She works to promote a better understanding of the traditional culture of Canada's North. Inspired by a trip to Baffin Island in the late 1970s, she has since become a world authority on Inuit clothing and has shared the rich history and spiritual symbolism of these garments. Volunteering at the McCord Museum for over two decades, she was guest curator for many years and oversaw important exhibitions of Inuit clothing. She has also worked with other museums, ensuring that Native people are equal partners in projects that concern their culture. In addition, she was a founding member of the Arctic Society of Canada of the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada (now the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami) and of Amnesty International Canada.
