After service in the Second World War as Commander of the Seaforth Highlanders, he became a leader in the real-estate business in Vancouver and held high posts in the Boy Scouts and the Corps of Commissionaires. His career was crowned by his term as Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia from 1978 to 1983.
