      A problem solver and consensus builder, Al O'Brien has made important contributions to improving public finance in Canada. For over 35 years, he occupied key posts within the government of Alberta, and played an instrumental role in reducing the province's debt and improving its financial systems. Since retiring, he has continued to work for the benefit of all Canadians as chair of the Federal Expert Panel on Equalization and Territorial Financing, and has held leadership roles with several professional organizations, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and the Institute of Intergovernmental Relations at Queen's University.

      For his leadership in the information technology sector, and for advancing research partnerships between industry and academia. John Thompson has made leading contributions in the information technology and business sectors. A former senior executive at IBM headquarters, he played a key role in the company’s radical reorientation from a focus on mainframe computers to business services and software. He was also a catalyst in the creation of advanced centres to foster collaboration between leading academics and industry partners. More recently, he served as the board chair of Toronto-Dominion Bank, overseeing a period of significant growth for the institution. He is also a notable leader at Western University and with the board of trustees of the Hospital for Sick Children.

      Matthew Spence has had a profound impact on health care in Canada. Following a distinguished career as a pediatric researcher and educator at both McGill and Dalhousie universities, he served as president and CEO of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research.       Ann Macaulay is commited to improving health care in Aboriginal communities. A family physician in Kahnawake, Quebec for more than 35 years and a McGill University professor, she has played a key role in a successful University-Kahnawake research project. The collaborative team has developed innovative programs aimed at reducing Type 2 diabetes in Aboriginal peoples. These incorporate Aboriginal traditions and the promotion of healthy lifestyles by Khanawake members in schools and within the broader community. Recognized around the world, this model is now being offered to other communities across Canada. As well, she is the author or co-author of many publications and a highly respected teacher and mentor.

      Throughout his distinguished career, John Crow has served his community and country with great distinction. A highly regarded economist, he has served in leadership roles with the International Monetary Fund and the Bank of Canada. He showed vision and direction as governor of the Bank of Canada by establishing inflation targets, which represented a major advance in Canada's monetary policy regime. He is now president of an economic and financial consulting firm, and is a senior fellow of the C.D. Howe Institute. Many corporate boards and not-for-profit organizations, including Arts for Children of Toronto, have benefited from his counsel.
