His deep commitment to human rights and civil liberties is evidenced in his roles as publisher, editor and activist. He is the founder of Harvest House Limited, a company which translated and published key French Canadian literary texts as well as works of the Quiet Revolution. His efforts reflect his desire for greater understanding between the French and English communities. A former Vice-President of PEN Canada, he has served in a number of other roles which promote social justice, including President of Amnesty International Canada, Director of the Canadian Civil Liberties Union and longtime board member of the Canadian Human Rights Foundation.
