A most accomplished abstract painter and educator, he has strongly influenced visual arts, particularly in Western Canada. His works, original and daring, can be found in many major Canadian collections. Former director of the Norman Mackenzie Art Gallery and a member of the Regina Five, he was also a founding director of the Faculty of Fine Art at York University.
