Officer of the Order of Canada
- Awarded on: May 30, 2001
- Invested on: February 22, 2002
He has worked in a myriad of ways to reduce the trauma of childhood cancer on patients and their families. Former Chief of Oncology at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, he initiated a system of care that addresses both the medical and psychosocial needs of patients. With the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO), he expanded this concept of collaboration to other Ontario hospitals while creating a united, respected voice for advocacy. Equally involved with international cancer organizations as with grassroots projects such as a summer camp for children, he is beloved by patients and respected by students and colleagues as a man of immense compassion and humanity.
