He is a research scientist, scholar and educator of international reputation. His scientific discoveries, related to polyesters, fibers, foams and pharmaceuticals, have led to significant economic growth in numerous sectors of our society. He was instrumental in initiating and developing the Partnership Action Group for Science and Engineering, whose member societies address issues concerning research and applications of science in Canada and define their economic benefits. He has encouraged important reflection upon the future of science and engineering.

The honorary member of numerous research societies and academies, he has worked on homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, the results of which have been heavily cited in international scientific publications.
