From her background in nursing, she became aware of the need to protect and preserve the dignity of senior citizens. Her bench-mark study, which was the first national survey on elder abuse, alerted governments, health care institutions and social service organizations to the dimensions of the problem of elderly people at risk. She has been instrumental in the development of education programs and public policies aimed at the prevention of elder abuse and neglect. As an advocate and spokesperson for Canada's senior citizens, she has been a dynamic force in dispelling negative societal stereotypes.
