He has championed many community causes in the last quarter century in the city of Calgary. Aside from his successful activities in the petroleum industry and with the Calgary Flames Hockey Club, he has led numerous fund-raising events for hospitals, educational institutions and the arts. Several organizations, such as the Foothills Provincial General Hospital and the Alberta Paraplegic Foundation, have benefited from his support and dynamic leadership.

As a trustee and chair of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, and as founding sponsor of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, this highly esteemed business leader and philanthropist has helped fund cutting-edge innovations in medical research and education. Through his support, these organizations have developed internationally renowned programs and initiatives, notably in the fields of neuroscience and mental health research. He is also a champion of hockey. His wise counsel and diplomacy were the hallmarks of his mandate as board chair of the National Hockey League, and he has been a long-time supporter of minor hockey in Canada. This is a promotion within the Order.
