One of Canada's top fisheries scientists, he has made major advances throughout his distinguished career. In the late 1960s, he contributed significantly to early research on acid rain. Since then, he has developed and perfected more accurate methods of determining the age of fish, and recently shed light on how climate conditions influence levels of fish stocks. He heads several international organizations concerned with Pacific stocks and, through his involvement with the Fisheries Science Documentary Society, makes this branch of science more visible.
