One of Canada's eminent pathologists, he was a pioneer in promoting healthy lifestyles. Recognizing the health and social costs of smoking and excess alcohol consumption, he influenced legislators to strengthen laws controlling the use of these substances. He initiated Manitoba's first laboratory service to measure blood alcohol levels, which led to his involvement in the campaign against drinking and driving. A professor at the University of Manitoba for many years, he is an advocate of regular exercise and an avid cyclist.
