The first director of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, he has been internationally recognized for his part in the development of the first successful simultaneous observations with radio telescopes thousands of kilometres apart. His contributions to the areas of solar research, stellar physics, radio astronomy and telescope design have been significant, but he also dedicated his career to providing opportunities for young Canadian scientists. In addition, he has unlocked the mysteries of space for the public by promoting the use of observatories as educational facilities for the general populace.
