One of the most respected physicists in Canada, he is constantly consulted by both American and domestic scientific organizations. He has chaired such organizations as the Canadian Association of Physicists and the Association for the Advancement of Science in Canada. He was the founder and director of the nuclear physics laboratory at the University of Montreal before accepting the chair of the Atomic Energy Control Board, which flourished under his guidance. Throughout his long career, he has tirelessly promoted activities that have inspired many of his students to become involved in research.
