Apart from her own valuable work as chairperson of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, she has, for many years, actively promoted voluntarism, open discussion of gender issues, multiculturalism and international development. She has done so mainly through her involvement with such noted organizations as the Laurier Institute, the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy and the Aga Khan Foundation Canada.
