Dean emeritus of the University of British Columbia's forestry faculty, he is a distinguished wood chemist who has devoted himself to promoting the development of forestry science and education in Canada. In industry as in academia, he encouraged research in forestry and helped lay the foundation for today's more holistic, ecological approach to the subject.
