He has been a distinguished and extensively-published geological research scientist, a brilliant teacher and an expert member of several commissions who has devoted his energies to the Canadian North. The former Director of the Institute for Northern Studies at the University of Saskatchewan, he launched and edited the successful interdisciplinary journal, "The Musk-Ox", which became an outlet for discussions on the physical, natural and social sciences of the North.
