An active participant in the sport of sailing, both as an athlete and as a volunteer, he was responsible for financially salvaging Canada's challenge for the 1986 America's Cup as well as for providing opportunities to foster international youth competition. His philanthropic contributions towards the development of the sport have helped bring world-wide recognition and distinction to Canadian sailing.
