He has been an ardent supporter of theatre in Canada for many years, working as a volunteer with the same enthusiasm for small community groups as for the Stratford and Shaw Festivals. One of the founders of the National Theatre School, he also spearheaded a grassroots movement that helped to cultivate today's audience and led to the establishment of many theatres from coast to coast, including the Crest and the Neptune.
