The only Canadian man to compete in both a Winter and Summer Olympics, in both cross-country skiing and cycling, he has recently concentrated on skiing alone with spectacular success. The first to win all four men's events at a national championship, he was soon the first Canadian to win a World Cup race and, in 1988, the first Canadian in 100 years of racing to win the Holmenkollen 50-km World Cup race and to win two World Cup races on successive weekends.
