He is the first Canadian-born Black athlete to stand at the victory podium and receive an Olympic medal in track and field. Training by running alongside the CP railway tracks and occasionally in farmers' fields, he was a member of the 4X400 - metre relay team that won a bronze medal at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and a silver medal at the 1934 British Empire Games in London. He continues to be an inspiration to young people in the community, reminding them that dedication and commitment are values to be cherished.
