As Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Michael's Hospital, he attained a reputation for excellence as a surgeon and clinical teacher. A leader in the development and perfection of new medical advances, he performed the first successful cardiac transplant in Canada. Sensitive to his patients' religious beliefs, he also invented a bloodless surgical technique for the procedure. He was an early proponent of a multi-disciplinary approach to care, assembling a specialized team to respond to the complex range of patient needs.
